MS 010 - Count Otto Franc Von Lichtenstein Collection

Abstract

Collection consists of four journals by Count Otto Franc von Lichtenstein relating daily activities as he ran the Pitchfork Ranch on the upper Greybull River west of present day Meeteetse, Wyoming.  Typed transcripts are present for journals (please click 'text' tab on upper left hand side of image viewer within each item listed in Box 2).

Given to the Center by Carol Hunter, this collection contains correspondence, research notes, maps, photographs and slides concerning Hunter’s research on the Medicine Wheels located in Montana and Wyoming. Most of the material in this collection deals with various aspects of the archaeoastronomy of medicine wheels and other prehistoric sites.

MS 012 - Frank Tenney Johnson Collection

Abstract

A renowned Western artist and illustrator, Frank Tenney Johnson (1874 – 1939) studied art in Milwaukee and New York before establishing a successful artist colony in Alhambra, California. This collection contains the best known primary resources concerning Johnson's life and works. Included are correspondence, sketch books, ledger books of art sales, diaries, scrapbooks, clippings, memorabilia, and over 6,000 photographic prints and negatives.

Abstract

William Henry Dethlef Koerner (1878 – 1938) was a prominent illustrator and artist of the American West. By the 1920s, he was one of the best known magazine and book illustrators in the country, with many of The Saturday Evening Post covers as examples of his work. This collection comes from his studio and includes correspondence, research articles, photographs, and a large collection of magazines and books containing Koerner illustrations.

Abstract Born in New York, Larry Larom was educated at the Lawrenceville School and Princeton University. Coming to Wyoming in 1906, Larom developed the Valley Ranch outside of Cody, Wyoming, into one of the finest dude ranches in the West. He was also involved in wilderness and wildlife conservation, tourism, and the development of Wyoming. MS 017 - Charles Rapp Collection

This collection consists of the 15 letters from Charles Rapp to Eva Shepard written from various locations in Wyoming Territory. Mr. Rapp, of New York, discusses gold mining, women homesteaders on the frontier, Mormon immigration, Shoshone and Sioux Indians, and a description of a visit to the Little Big Horn battlefield three days after the battle.

Abstract

This collection consists of a handwritten manuscript, with typescript of same, written by Capt. Leon Richards (brother of Wyoming Governor W.A. Richards), made after a survey of the western Wyoming boundary. The account, “The Yellowstone National Park Area as I Saw It in 1874,” describes the thermal areas and other natural features of the Park.

Zahn.
